IT’S EASY BEING GREEN

22-April 2016

Brea, CA— Contract Services Group’s (CSG) Clean Green program standard is to clean facilities for the health of its occupants, our employees and the protection of the environment for today and tomorrow.  Our approach is a total commitment of our staff and a partnership with our clients to achieve our goal.

CSG continually monitors cleaning chemical usage to ensure environmental safety. CSG utilizes 100% recyclable paper products and only uses backpack vacuums that are proven to be faster and healthier with the ability to clean up to 10,000 square feet per hour and remove allergens. CSG is also a proud owner of the Tennant T5 Walk-Behind Floor Scrubber with ec-H20 technology. The ec-H20 technology scrubs three times further and utilizes 70% less water than conventional scrubbing methods. This increases productivity and reduces cost, protecting both our environment and employees.

It takes several components to produce an environmentally preferable cleaning program. Many of the green products, equipment and tools offered today are more effective than conventional products.  Cost has become very competitive and productivity has improved. Today, CSG has made it easy for guiding owners and property managers to implement Green Cleaning by bringing all of the components together into a single offering to maximize the opportunity to green a building, produce a healthy and productive indoor environment, and to do so cost effectively.

EXTERIOR CLEANING OF HIGH RISE BUILDINGS JUST GOT EASIER

1-April 2016

Brea, CA—Helicopter buckets (helibuckets), also known as bambi buckets, are not only used to deliver water to aid in aerial firefighting anymore but are now used for exterior cleaning of high-rise buildings. Contract Services Group, Inc. (CSG) has jumped on this new use of technology and has outfitted a helicopter loaded with deionized water in its Bambi bucket. Why helicopter bucketdeionized water? The use of deionized water helps reduce the speed of buildup, as there are no minerals in the water due to the purification process. These minerals usually adhere to the glass and attract debris from the environment.

Bambi buckets hold anywhere from 72-2,600 gallons of water. The size and elevation of the high-rise building will determine which size bucket the cleaning crew will use.

It was recently discovered that using these helibuckets are the most efficient and fastest way to clean the building’s exterior and windows. The pressure released when the water is dropped onto the building has enough power to clean the windows in one quick motion, never leaving streaks.

Helibuckets usually contain fire retardant foam used to cool the fuel of the flames. However, when used in exterior cleaning, this foam is replaced with a cleaning agent to help wash away buildup from the building and deliver a protective coat to all glass material. The protective coat helps prevent damage to the windows and increases the amount of time between cleanings; saving both time and resources for the owners of the buildings.

To start saving and keeping up with the trends, hire CSG for all your exterior cleaning needs.

FACT OR FIB: WINDOW WASHING DETRIMENTAL DURING A DROUGHT?

28-August-2015

pic 018Brea, CA— Many businesses question if window washing their commercial building is a necessity, especially when facing a major drought. With California and many other states passing new laws on mandatory water reduction by 25% and the California State Water Resources Control Board stating that outdoor water use accounts for almost 80% of use, the question seems easy to answer; “Save money and water by refraining from window washing the building this year.” However, the answer is not so simple.

Contract Services Group, Inc. (CSG) is Green Clean certified and holds to the most recent standards, equipment, products and practices. Because of such actions, minimal water use is actually required in order to wash the windows of a building. With over 40 years in the Window Washing Services Industry, CSG has seen the downfall effects of what happens to glass when windows are not washed on a regular basis.

Glass is a very delicate, porous surface that can develop build up of dirt or other airborne pollutants and requires periodic cleaning and upkeep. Because windows are constantly exposed to outside elements such as heat from the sun, humidity, wind and rain, the dirt/pollutant buildup can penetrate through the glass causing permanent damage and staining. Glass attracts contamination quite regularly and can cost a business up to hundreds of thousands of dollars for window replacement. Degradation of glass will affect the value of the property. Avoid expensive costs while still conserving water and wash your windows thoroughly on a regular basis.

The question remains, fact or fib? FIB. Window washing is not detrimental during a drought.

CSG PROMOTES WATER CONSERVATION CLEANING DURING MAJOR DROUGHT

30-July-2015

Brea, CA–With hot summer months amidst and the seriousness of the drought, Contract Services Group, Inc. (CSG) continues to add to its list of environmentally friendly and water conservation services with the purchase of the Tennant T5 Walk-Behind Floor Scrubber with ec-H20 technology.

The ec-H20 technology electrically converts water into a superior cleaning Chemical-Free FloorScrubber solution. With this chemical-free technology the environmental and human health issues associated with producing, transporting, packaging, using and disposing of harsh chemicals are eliminated. The ec-H20 technology scrubs three times further and utilizes 70% less water than conventional scrubbing methods.

“CSG is always looking to enhance the delivery of its services with systems and technology that will positively impact the environment,” commented Casey Pearce, President of Contract Services Group. Pearce further commented, “CSG’s green cleaning programs are designed to create a healthier environment for building occupants. We purchased the T5 ec-H20 Walk-Behind Floor Scrubber with its water-only cleaning technology to maintain our position as a leading provider of green cleaning services.”

As a company, CSG is very water conscious and environmentally smart in-house as well, thus is participating in California’s “Let It Go” and “Turn it off” Campaigns this summer by limiting outdoor water use and is to invest in desert landscaping in the near future replacing grass landscaping all together; as well as introducing energy efficient water heaters and instant hot water to restroom faucets and facilities in the Orange County Corporate Headquarters to refrain from overuse of water.

Meet the Expert: ISSA’s Dan Wagner

Dan Wagner, ISSA’s Director of Facility Service Programs

Dan Wagner is our CSG Expert Guest this month. CSG values the industry knowledge and best practices strategies that we have developed based on our association with Dan Wagner and ISSA. We hope to share our enthusiasm with our customers.

Check out our interview with Dan Wagner for more on how the CIMS-GB certification process has helped CSG improve and expand our services.

1.      As a CIMS-GB certified provider, CSG understands that the CIMS certification process was developed through a collaboration of constituents from the cleaning industry, facility management, and purchasing communities. In what way does the CIMS and CIMS-GB certification improve a building contractor’s operations based on this peer review?

We intentionally involved as many stakeholders as possible in the development process to ensure that the needs of all were met.  For example, we wanted to involve representatives of the facility management/ end user community in order to make sure the Standard covered key areas of focus of health and safety of facility occupants and to ensure that the cleaning service provider is capable of delivering a quality, dependable service.

At the end of the day, by involving all parties, the Standard is set up to facilitate true partnerships between a contractor and their customers and make sure that they are receiving best in class service.

2.      How does the certification process bring an increase in efficiency contractor services?

The Standard itself and the certification process forces and organization to perform an in-depth analysis of their operations in five key areas of management best practices: (1) Quality Systems; (2) Service Delivery; (3) Human Resources; (4) Health, Safety and Environmental Stewardship; and (5) Management Commitment.

By requiring an organization to focus on ensuring that they have the necessary pieces in place and have achieved implementation on the account level, the program naturally leads to an increase in efficiency and an improvement in operations overall.

3.      What improvements to staff training result from a CIMS certification?

Not only is cleaning professional training one of the hallmark requirements of the Standard but the Standard also serves to increase overall professionalism and develop a sense of pride in the worker.

We all know that there cleaning organizations that merely give lip service to training, yet is remains one of the key investments a company can make.  Further, investing in true excellence should include helping workers understand their true role as protectors of health and sustainability.  No longer are they mere “janitors,” they are now cleaning service professionals and the defenders of public health.

4.      You have discussed in other articles that while CIMS is voluntary, many industry specific laws and regulations are required. How does CIMS certification process deal with these laws?

Section four of the Standard – Health, Safety and Environmental Stewardship – is premised on making sure an organization is committed to legal and regulatory compliance as it relates to health and safety.  That said, the section includes a number of elements pertaining to federal OSHA regulations, including hazard communication, personal protective equipment, bloodborne pathogens and spill containment.

CIMS assessors certainly do not act as federal enforcement agents and the assessment is not intended to mirror a regulatory inspection but the Standard certainly does want to make sure that organizations are living up to their legal responsibilities.  The customer certainly demands it.

5.      ISSA recommends hiring a CIMS certified contractor to assure a partnership with quality successful cleaning organization. What is the specific value of a CIMS and CIMS-GB certification to the customers of a building contractor?

Let’s face it…cleaning service organizations run the gamut from the very good to the very bad.  Customers who understand the “true value of clean,” therefore, recognize that they need to be very careful in selecting a cleaning service provider and do everything they can to make sure their vendor is dependable and capable of delivering a clean indoor environment. After all, their cleaning service provider is directly responsible for protecting the health and safety of facility occupants.

CIMS and CIMS-GB certification makes the contractor selection process much easier and offers a level of assurance that a company is a quality, customer-focused organization that has the necessary management structure.  By “taking the guesswork out of the equation,” CIMS/CIMS-GB certification allows a customer to immediately identify a cleaning provider who is dependable and has proven they meet THE industry standard of excellence.

The CIMS-GB certification is now a direct compliance option in the most recent version of LEED: EBOM.  Specifically, using a CIMS-GB certified provider enables a facility to immediately meet the new “Green Cleaning Policy” prerequisite – making a LEED: EBOM applicant’s job MUCH easier!

6.      What is ISSA doing to increase exposure of the CIMS program to end users of cleaning services?

As part of the association’s larger mission to “change the way the world views cleaning,” ISSA proactively educates facility management professionals, procurement representatives, and other end users on the CIMS/CIMS-GB program and how it can be used to identify and pre-qualify dependable cleaning organizations.

This involves working very closely with end user organizations such as the International Facility Management Association (IFMA); APPA; the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and many others to help spread the word.

ISSA representatives present on CIMS and the true value of clean at end user events throughout the country and the association has an exhibition presence at all major facility management shows.  And we are always looking for additional opportunities to get the word out on why requiring CIMS/CIMS-GB certification is a no-brainer!
